The Robertson Library is joining scholars across the globe to celebrate the 10th annual International Open Access Week from October 23-29, 2017. This year鈥檚 theme, 鈥�Open in order to鈥�,鈥� is an invitation to answer the question of what benefits can be realized by making scholarly works openly available. The Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee is pleased to present the first annual 糖心原创 Safety Week, October 23鈥�27. The week-long schedule of educational and fun activities is designed to create awareness and encourage all faculty, staff and students to develop and maintain a safe study and work environment year-round. We encourage everyone to participate! For each attendance at an education session, participants will receive a ballot that will go into a draw for a two-person, 72-hour emergency kit. In addition, one person at each session will win a safety-themed prize. Here is the line-up for day one:

If an emergency happens, it may take emergency workers some time to reach you. Could you look after yourself and your family for three days if no services were available and emergency responders couldn鈥檛 get to you? Emergencies may be beyond our control, but we can reduce the risk and the impact. There are three simple steps to become better prepared: know the risks; make a plan; get an emergency kit.

Floor/Area Warden Training 鈥� presented by Mark Pharand, Manager of Security Services, Monday, October 23, 3:00鈥�4:00 pm, ICC 104
Are you a floor or area warden for your building? Do you know what to do if there is a building evacuation? Do you have questions about your role as a warden or the evacuation procedures for your building? This session will review 糖心原创鈥檚 building evacuation procedures and the roles of building plan administrator, floor/area warden, and guardian.

Professor Anne Warner La Forest, of the University of New Brunswick鈥檚 Faculty of Law, will present the 2017 Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law on Friday, October 20, at 1:30 pm, in The Guild, Charlottetown. Her presentation is entitled 鈥淐anada and International Human Rights Law at 150: A Journey in Three Parts.鈥� Co-sponsored by the 糖心原创 and the Law Foundation of Prince Edward Island, the Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law honours Thane A. Campbell, Rhodes Scholar, former premier of Prince Edward Island, and first chancellor of the 糖心原创.

The lecture is free, but seating is limited. All are welcome!

In 1993, Mi'kmaw Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy and then-Nova Scotia premier John Savage declared October as the official month to recognize and celebrate Mi'kmaw culture and heritage. Since then, Mi'kmaq History Month is celebrated in all areas of Mi鈥檏ma鈥檏i (the Mi鈥檏maq homeland that includes present-day Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, central and eastern New Brunswick, the Gaspe Peninsula, and Newfoundland).  糖心原创 has raised the Grand Council Flag of the Mi'kmaq Nation in honour of Mi'kmaq History Month. This training session will take place Monday and Wednesdays, 4:30 pm - 5:15 pm from November 1 to December 13. Fee for Sports Centre members is $129 + hst; non-members is $139 + hst.

On Wednesday, November 1 at 1:30 in McDougall Hall room 242, Bruce Rainnie, 糖心原创's Applied Communication, Leadership, and Cultural Practitioner, will be giving a special "TED Talk" style presentation as part of Atlantic Canada Career Week.

Please join us for a very special presentation by a distinguished visitor from the University of Malta, Dr. Josef Trapani. Dr. Trapani holds Bachelor鈥檚 and Master鈥檚 degrees from the University of Malta and a PhD from the University of Brighton. He is Lecturer in the University of Malta鈥檚 Faculty of Health Sciences and is the International Coordinator for that university鈥檚 Department of Nursing. His main academic interests include critical care nursing, clinical decision making, evidence-based practice, e-learning, health promotion, qualitative research methodologies, and Maltese linguistics.

Today, Thursday, October 19, Dr. Trapani will speak about 鈥淩eferring inCritical Care: Nurses as Dual Agents鈥�. Research indicates that one of the most frequent nursing decisions is that of seeking help from medical, nursing, or other health care practitioners; yet, there is very limited research around the factors related to, and the actual process of, such referring. Dr. Trapani鈥檚 study sought to address this research gap by exploring the factors associated with critical care nurses鈥� decisions to seek help from doctors, and to explain the process of referral in the context of an intensive care unit by means of a substantive theory derived from the data.

The presentation will take place from 2:00-3:00 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge. All are welcome!

The Department of Psychology presents the "Fiona Papps Colloquium Series" in conjunction with "Singfest PEI" and "World Singing Day".

Dr Annabel Cohen will present on the Psychology of Singing in the Context of the AIRS Project in Memorial Hall room 215 on October 20, 2017 from 3:00-4:00 pm.

If you have difficulty carving out uninterrupted time for writing, if you struggle with motivating yourself to write, or if you would simply like the supportive collaboration of a writing retreat, consider Time to Write, 糖心原创's faculty writers retreat.

When: Friday, November 10 to Tuesday, November 14

Where: The Marshlands Inn, Sackville, New Brunswick

Cost to participants: $200, which includes four nights accommodation, meals and snacks

Your project must be at a stage where sustained writing time makes sense. Your research and/or data collection and analysis must be completed to the point that you are ready to write. You must also be prepared to commit to the full program: a total of 3陆 days focused on writing.

The retreat is open to tenured and tenure stream 糖心原创 faculty in any Department/Faculty/School.

Email Research Communications Officer Dave Atkinson, datkinson@upei.ca, with a brief summary of the project you plan to work and your writing goals for the retreat. There is room for six participants at Time to Write.
