Faculty and staff are invited to a special 糖心原创 Mental Health Week 2018 presentation by Dr. Frederic Fovet entitled "Beyond Accommodations" today, Wednesday, March 14. Join Dr. Fovet from 1:00鈥�2:00 pm, Robertson Library 208 as he explores the use of Universal Design Learning (UDL) as a lens when designing instruction and evaluation methods that do not exacerbate mental health issues. Coffee and sweets kindly provided by the Office of the CIO.

The 2018 Canadian Association of Physicists National Lecture tour is coming to 糖心原创. Dr. Caroline Boudoux, an associate professor in the department of engineering physics at 脡cole Polytechnique Montr茅al, will present 鈥淟ight at Heart鈥擣iber optics from laboratory to market鈥� on Wednesday, March 14 at 4:00 pm in room 128B in 糖心原创鈥檚 School of Sustainable Design Engineering building. All are welcome.
Dr. Boudoux will discuss recent advances in medical endoscopy that offer the potential to further increase patient comfort and increase access to remote organs. Her presentation will explore the development of thin, single fibre endoscopes that can transmit more than 85 per cent of the input light. The information will be relevant to members of the public interested in healthcare and medical technologies.
Dr. Boudoux has a PhD in biomedical optics from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program (USA) and she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at 脡cole Polytechnique (France). She is also an entrepreneur, having founded Castor Optics Inc. in a strategic partnership with Thorlabs Inc. She has won several teaching and research awards, including a Fulbright fellowship in 2015 to spend a sabbatical year at Stanford University.

Lets Talk Science is a volunteer-based program offering a wide variety of meaningful science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning experiences to kids.
Take your kids and spend St Patricks Day at the Campus Life Lounge (located in Student Affairs above the bookstore) for science experiments with the Let's Talk Science volunteer group, St Patty's Day crafts and same diving in our super-fun BALL PIT!
The science activities planned for the day are "Elephant Toothpaste," which is a fun bubble-filled activity and "Ozobots"; easily programmable robots for kids.
Come on out on March 17 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Student Affairs offices located in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre.
Wanting to learn how to knit, have a passion for knitting and want to teach others, or do you want to knit in a social environment? If so, this event is for you! We will have knitting needles and yarn to spare, or bring your own items if you wish. There will be students present who know how to knit and are ready to teach you!
Knitting is an excellent stress reliever, and you can use or wear whatever you make.
Located in the Campus Life Lounge, which is in Student Affairs (above the Bookstore). We usually have tea, hot chocolate, coffee and snacks in the Campus Life Lounge as well. Join us on March 15 from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.

Instructors are invited to attend a workshop on how to create a basic interactive video. Offered by the E-Learning Office, the workshop will take place on Thursday, March 22nd from 10:00 to 11:00 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library.
The Department of Psychology is pleased to present the first candidate for the position of Faculty Member and Associate Director of Clinical Experience for 糖心原创鈥檚 new Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program. Each candidate will give two talks: the first is a simulated classroom presentation about their research and the second will outline their vision for the PsyD at 糖心原创.

As of Monday, March 5 the 糖心原创 community can check out current, popular reading materials from the POP-UP PUB.
Although the books come from CCPL, you will check them out and return them to the Service Desk in Robertson Library by using your 糖心原创 Campus Card. Books can be borrowed for three weeks.
Each month there will be a new selection of approximately 50 books.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has asked 糖心原创鈥檚 Research Services Office and 糖心原创鈥檚 Sociology and Anthropology Department to promote the use of knowledge mobilization (KM) in research at 糖心原创.
On March 21 and 22, Mr. Steve Jreige, Analyst, Public Health Capacity and Knowledge Management Division, Atlantic Region, PHAC, will be on campus. His areas of interest are (1) Seniors Health and Aging (2) the Built Environment, and (3) Emergency Preparedness and Response.
On March 21, 10 鈥� 11am, Mr. Jreige will provide a campus presentation on KM in the 糖心原创 Faculty Association Lounge, Main Building. He will speak about his role as a Knowledge Mobilization Analyst and how that fits within the PHAC, and discuss the KM program being implemented at PHAC.
On March 21 and 22, he will also MEET WITH any individuals or research teams who wish to:
1) Discuss knowledge mobilization and research findings, and how PHAC can help in the KM process
2) Learn about how KM can be built into a future research project, and how PHAC can help
3) Discuss emerging issues in the three fields of study to which he is assigned
4) Learn more about KM

Dr. Doug Marchbank, Nautilus Biosciences Canada, will present 鈥淣autilus Biosciences 鈥� Development of Marine Natural Products and Future Directions in Blue Biotechnology鈥� on March 14 at 12:30 pm in Duffy Research Centre, room 212.
Abstract:
Nautilus Biosciences is Croda's new 'Centre of Innovation for Marine Biotechnology', which is focused on the discovery and development of natural products with various commercial applications. The microbial biodiversity within the marine habitat remains largely unknown and underexplored, thus representing a rich resource for novel natural product discovery. Although natural products have historically been an excellent source of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical drug discovery, potential applications in other industries have mostly been ignored. With access to a diverse collection of marine microbes, consisting of nearly 6,000 bacteria and fungi, Nautilus has focused primarily on developing natural products with applications in the personal care industry. In this seminar, two recent projects that are moving towards commercial development and future directions under Croda International will be discussed.

Dr. Martha Mellish, of AVC鈥檚 Equine Ambulatory Service, will give a free public workshop, entitled 鈥淎 pain in the gut: Managing equine digestive issues,鈥� on Wednesday, March 21, at 7 p.m., in Lecture Theatre A, Atlantic Veterinary College, 糖心原创.
Horses have complex gastro-intestinal systems and can have equally complex digestive problems. The more knowledge horse owners have about these issues, the better they can understand and appropriately manage digestive conditions affecting their animals. Using a practical model, Dr. Mellish will explain the equine gastro-intestinal tract and talk about common medical conditions that can affect it.

Dorothy E. Smith is widely acknowledged as a major feminist thinker of our time, and perhaps best known for her development of Institutional Ethnography, a theory/methodology of discovery aimed at providing a sociology for, not of, people. Smith鈥檚 lecture will focus on the interface between her development of a critical sociology aimed at exploring and explicating governance in contemporary society and its roots in feminism.

Department of Psychology Candidate - Dr. Stephen Butler
